A Fascination with Change [Winner]
by Jack Kelly
Susan Carney is the Artist in Residence at Shepherd University. Susan is a painter and printmaker and works with monotype, a printmaking process in which only one print is created. Because she works with stencils, she often produces a series of similar prints yet each print is unique. Susan says she likes to experiment with texture using canvas, burlap or plastic. “I love the serendipity and unpredictability that results.” A fascination with change informs Carney’s work. Watercolor, spray paint, acrylic paint, varnish and collage combine on wood, canvas and paper with a vocabulary of images such as birds, insects, knots, weaving, and fragments of the human body.
